Why he's โฃ๏ธ MORE than "a beautiful piece of frivolity"

Hi Reader!

I read a LOT of romance books. And sometimes there's a hero who just. won't. get out. of my brain. ๐Ÿ˜…

Illium from Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series is one of those heroes.

I first started reading that series over 15 years ago, and I still think of him at totally random times.

It is downright weird. Because the angel Illium is not even the hero of most Guild Hunter stories.

Yes, yes, he finally got his ascension bookโ€”check out the fab cover hereโ€”and I loved it (and cried for two days).

โšก But my addiction to this hero goes WAY deeper than power.

I explain why he's so damn magnetic in this article: ๐Ÿ‘‡

In an early Guild Hunter book, the narrative itself called Illium "a beautiful piece of frivolity". But he is steel beneath the shine. And he intentionally developed his ๐ŸŒž sunny persona over hundreds of years.

If you've listened to my Episode 13 podcast "Your Hero's Best Trait Might Be Their Biggest Lie" (click here and scroll down here to listen), you know about the 4 different types of self-protection our heroes use.

And in that podcast โ˜๏ธ, I shared two examples of what Flair looks like in a romance hero (and in a real person, me! โ˜บ๏ธ).

In today's article, I go even deeper.

โฃ๏ธ Because there's a reason your hero might NOT be taking up space in your readers' brains for years afterward.

I'm sharing WHY + HOW to diagnose your hero's addictability quotient here.

Hi Reader! When I was an acquiring editor for a small press, I got to decide which books we published in my category romance lines. (Sounds exciting, right? What it really means is that I had to read a ton of slush, and that's not nearly as fun as it sounds. ๐Ÿฅด๐Ÿ’”) And there was this one story that I was SO excited to work on. It was the perfect fit, with all the right tropes and romantic chemistry that ๐Ÿ”ฅ promised to be off the charts. But when I got the manuscript, the story was kinda boring. I...

Hi Reader! Miranda and I disagreed. On camera. More than once. ๐Ÿ˜… And we had SUCH a good time, we're doing it again! Stay tuned for our deep dive of Warrior, Princess, Assassin later this summer! And I'm not talking about the similar-but-different style of disagreement. I'm talking "Are we reading the same book??" disagreement. ๐Ÿ‘‚ She prefers traditional, formal fantasy voice. I loved Fourth Wing's modern slang. (That book felt written for me.) ๐Ÿ“– I loved the Xaden bonus chapters. She thought...

Hi Reader! Confession time. ๐Ÿ™ˆ I almost DNF'd A Court of Thorns and Roses. (I KNOW. Put down the pitchforks. ๐Ÿ˜…) It wasn't the writing, and it wasn't because of Feyre. It was the squalor. The starving, the freezing, the hovel house, the hunting-to-survive desperation... ๐Ÿคฎ I read romance to escape. And living through Feyre's medieval survival struggle felt more like a camping trip gone very wrong. โ›บ๐Ÿ˜ฉ (And I'm barely willing to glamp.) But plenty of readers LOVE that gritty opening. For some of...
